Barry Galenza

Third Degree black belt (Sandan)

Started study of Karate in Sept. 1981

Student Seniority Ranking: #4

Key word: Determination

Barry was entering his first year of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta when his uncle, Neil Dunnigan returned to Edmonton and began teaching karate. Always athletic, Barry decided to find out first hand what his uncle really knew! Barry adeptly juggled his Pharmacy classes with his karate classes and managed to get obtain degrees in both arenas. His graduation with a Pharmacy degree was celebrated by a trip to Okinawa to participate in a world wide karate camp. Learning was- and still is in his blood!

Barry was in the first group of students who Sensei Dunnigan promoted to first degree black belt in his new Edmonton school. Barry was a constant presence in the school for a number of years, gradually reducing his participation as other important aspects of his life competed for time- managing a pharmacy, family commitments with his wife and two young children, community obligations, etc.

Barry and his family moved to Camrose in 1991, when he and his wife Janet assumed operation of the family pharmacy. Despite the distance and increased responsibility that comes with now owning and operating 2 pharmacies, Barry still manages to drive approximately 250km. round trip to attend a senior belt class most weeks. Anyone who has worked out with Barry can attest to his determination, conditioning and strong sense of spirit.

Barry says that his commitment to study has been sustained over the years by the benefits he reaps- in terms of physical fitness, friendships and stress relief. He views his karate as lifelong practice- not surprising given his track record! In his spare time, Barry coaches his children’s sports teams, plays golf and hockey, as well as contributes to the Camrose Knights of Columbus and the Camrose and District Palliative Care Council. Want something done- ask a busy man!
