What do the different ranks of Black Belts mean?

The ranks of black belts reflect different levels of knowledge and skill.  Contrary to popular belief, a first degree black belt is more of a beginner than an expert.  I often refer to a first degree black belt as the North American equivalent of graduating from high school, a significant accomplishment but not an expert.  Essentially the person is now ready to build on the basic knowledge gained to date.

A second degree black belt is similar to obtaining a diploma at the college level, whereas a third degree is like graduating from University with a bachelors degree.  A fourth degree is the same as obtaining a Masters Degree and a fifth degree belt is the equivalent of a doctorate.  The Ranks of sixth degree to tenth degree are honorary degrees, bestowed upon black belts who continue to study and teach, thereby deepening their knowledge and skill throughout life.

What is the most rewarding part of being a
Black Belt in this School?

I place a great great value on the relationships that have been forged over the years.  The relationships are fostered through the school's inherent belief of treating everyone with trust, respect, and equality.  It's like being part of a large and very close family, who can be counted on to always support each other through the hills and valleys of life.  I feel privileged to be part of such dedicated and caring group of individuals.
