Laura Krenz's Personal Bio

Laura became intrigued with traditional karate, when she met Sensei Dunnigan socially and engaged in a conversation on the subject of his life’s work. Laura recalls Sensei Dunnigan as being charismatic, friendly, informative and open-minded. Having recently returned from a year of travelling in Asia, she had not yet resumed her previous exercise regime of swimming. Laura decided to give karate a try and has been sold on it ever since. Her karate journey, however, has not always meant travel on an easy path.

The primary challenge which Laura faced and conquered admirably, was in relation to the physical contact. While all contact at Neil Dunnigan’s is framed within a context of trust and respect, the reality of defending oneself from a focused attack brings various factors into play. Through perseverance, trust and patience, Laura gradually overcame many hurdles, to the point that she is now viewed by all as a wonderful role model for men and women alike. Laura is a fine example of what can be achieved through continuously striving for balance of body, mind and spirit; the essential elements found within all well-rounded karate practitioners.

Laura states that her study is sustained by the personal growth she has experienced. She notes that the school’s atmosphere of respect, cameraderie and acceptance of differences provides a solid foundation for proceeding at one’s own pace. Over the years Laura has had many opportunities to train with North American and Okinawan master instructors. The learning has always been great and the spirit of fellowship embracing.

Laura is a seasoned Speech Language Pathologist who fulfills direct practice and administrative functions within the school system, as well as speaking engagements at conferences. As part of her teaching nature, Laura readily participates in demonstrations on many fronts… including impromptu demonstrations on skeptical brothers within her fun loving family!
