Ron Shannon

Third Degree black belt (Sandan)

Started study of Karate in April 1990

Student Seniority Ranking: #??

Key word: Balance

At the age of 36, Ron was thinking about options for getting back in shape, when a neighbor invited him to visit Neil Dunnigan’s with some friends. As he was intrigued by the martial arts, Ron accepted the invitation. Although he had knee problems to deal with, Ron found the style quite adaptable to his needs. All five men joined, with three of them later attaining their black belts.

Ron identifies the key factors that sustain his commitment to study as the quality of the teaching and the camaraderie with fellow students. He notes that traditional karate provides him with great stress relief, while he enjoys its inherent discipline and philosophy. Ron also values the strong physical conditioning, describing it as excellent.

Having an outgoing personality and being a natural at analyzing and integrating his learning, Ron developed an interest in instructing. He was gradually introduced to teaching and routinely shares his experiences and knowledge with other students, whether as an instructor or class partner. A personal goal for Ron is to attain the rank of Shihan, (Master Instructor).

Ron is married with a pre-adolescent son, who also joined his dad with karate for a couple of years. Professionally, Ron is the Manager of Production at a local window company. Although constantly balancing job demands, family and social responsibilities, Ron always squeaks in time for personal growth time through his karate.

Ron travelled to Okinawa with Sensei Dunnigan and karate colleagues in 1994 where he was privileged to be promoted by senior Okinawan masters. Those familiar with Ron know that he’ll be back!
